Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for president, claims he is “healthy” and still in the running for the nation’s top office in 2023 despite concerns about his health.
Mr. Tinubu, who posted a seven-second training video of himself pedaling a stationary bike on Twitter, also refuted rumors that he had dropped out of the February 2023 presidential race.
“Many have said I have died; others claim I have withdrawn from the presidential campaign,” the APC candidate tweeted on Sunday through his verified handle to show Nigerians, especially his critics, a ‘proof of life’.
“Well… Nope. This is the reality: I am strong, I am healthy and I am READY to serve Nigerians from Day One.”
Nigerians have been quite concerned about Mr. Tinubu’s health, and they have been very critical of his whereabouts in recent days.
The APC candidate has missed three significant occasions building up to the 2023 presidential election, most notably the Thursday signing of the peace agreement between candidates that was held in Abuja.
The peace deal was attended by at least fifteen candidates vying for the presidency in 2023, but Mr. Tinubu was represented by his running mate, Kashim Shettima, which has further cast doubt on his suitability to lead the country.
The former governor of Lagos was in the United Kingdom, where he is reportedly receiving medical attention.
Following significant pressure, Mr. Tinubu’s APC campaign council spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, verified his location on Friday.
“Tinubu’s whereabouts. He is in London, in his house. Tinubu left Nigeria on Saturday night for a short break and in readiness for what will certainly be a gruelling campaign. I saw him, spoke with him two hours before he left. He was hale and hearty. He was not ill. He didn’t go to treat any ailment,” Mr Onanuga wrote on his Facebook page.
