Tems, Wizkid Win At BET Awards 2022

Tems and Wizkid, two of the biggest names in Nigerian music, took home stunning victories at the recently held Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards presentation on Monday, June 27.

Tems, whose true name is Temilade Openiyi, left the dramatic night at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles with two awards.

First, Tems, Wizkid, and Justin Bieber got a prize for “Best Collaboration” for their song “Essence.” This makes “Essence” the first African song to win a BET award, and Wizkid the first Nigerian and African to gain a prize outside the Best International Acts category.

Moments later, Tems emerged as the winner of the Best International Act.

The Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer was nominated with other talented acts such as Fireboy, Dave from the UK, Dinos from France, Fally Ipupa from Congo, Little Simz from the UK, Ludmilla from Brazil, Major League Djz from South Africa, and Tayc from France.

As the first African woman to win the Best International Category at the 2022 BET Awards, Tems also made history.

Tems becomes the fifth Nigerian to win a BET Award with her victory at the 2022 BET Awards, following Ice Prince, Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy.

Diddy received the Lifetime Achievement Award in addition to the customary accolades. He shares the accolade with many other luminaries, including Whitney Houston, Prince, Queen Latifah, Anita Baker, Mary J. Blige, Samuel Jackson, and many more.
