Somalia has launched a new TV channel called Daljir to counter Al-Shabab’s propaganda as the government ramps up its media campaign against the militant organization affiliated with al-Qaeda.
According to the official media, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud launched the SNTV Daljir channel, which “will focus on anti-Khawarij (Al-Shabab) operations”
Days earlier, the government claimed to have deactivated more than 500 accounts on social media that were promoting Al-Shabab ideologies.
Al-Shabab has a sophisticated media infrastructure that consists of dozens of social media accounts, as well as a number of affiliated media outlets.
The government outlawed the dissemination of “extremist ideology messages” that would “endanger national security” in local media on October 8.
The information ministry claimed that President Mohamud’s August declaration of “an all-out war” against Al-Shabab included the crackdown on pro-military media.
