Serena Williams Steps Up Her Preparation For Wimbledon

As she practiced on Centre Court on Friday afternoon, Serena Williams intensified her Wimbledon preparation.

At the Eastbourne International this week, the 40-year-old made his comeback to tennis after a one-year hiatus, but he was forced to withdraw owing to an injury to doubles partner Ons Jabeur.

Williams has already benefited from Wimbledon’s new rule enabling players to use Centre Court and No. 1 Court for practice before to the tournament’s start the following week.

Williams visited the location where she last appeared a year ago but had to leave early due to a calf ailment with the help of her instructor, Eric Hechtman, and hitting partner, Jarmere Jenkins.

She entered the main stadium after world No. 1 Iga Swiatej and spent 45 minutes practicing groundstrokes, overheads, and volleys.

On Monday, the American will take on 113th-ranked Harmony Tan to start her Wimbledon comeback.

Williams acknowledged earlier this week that she was worried about not playing again.

She said: ‘Did I ever doubt I would return? Absolutely, for sure. I would be dishonest if I said it wasn’t and now my body feels great.’

Quizzed on her future, Williams added: ‘You know what, I am literally taking it one day at a time. I really took my time with my hamstring injury, so I am not making a ton of decisions after this.

‘I did a lot of non-training in the beginning, obviously, and after I couldn’t play New York, I went cold turkey of not working out.

‘It felt good, but I always try to stay semi-fit because you never know when you are going to play Wimbledon.

‘I love tennis and I love playing, otherwise I wouldn’t be here, but I also love what I do off the court.’

Williams is currently not among the top 1200 players in the WTA because of her protracted absence.

Williams has won seven of her 23 Grand Slams at Wimbledon, and she’ll be aiming for a record-breaking 24th when play gets underway on Monday.
