Responders could be seen working to extract people from the wrecked yellow bus in photos posted on social media. It was not immediately clear what exactly caused the collision.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, expressed regret at the incident.

India has a high rate of fatal road accidents because of careless driving, badly maintained roads, and old vehicles. According to the authorities, more than 110,000 people are killed in traffic accidents each year in India.
