Benefica have announced the club has agreed to sell defender Ruben Dias to Manchester City for £65m, with Nicolas Otamendi going the opposite direction in a separate deal.
Both players are expected to join their new clubs once personal terms has been finalised, the club also revealed.
Dias, 23, has been a mainstay for Portuguese club Benfica since emerging through the academy ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, and was in Portugal’s 2018 World Cup squad.
The Portugal international has been linked with some of Europe elite clubs, including Manchester United, but rivals City have now have an agreement with Benfica to sign the center-back.
Benefica confirmed the news on their official website on Sunday, after which they announced a €15m (£13.67m) deal for Otamendi, who must now undergo a medical.
Dias will join City for an initial £62m, with a further £3m subject to add-ons.
Dias scored and captained Benfica in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Moreinense, after which Dias hugged his teammates and Benfica’s sporting director Rui Costa as he left the field at full-time.
After the game Dias said: “It was a special moment [with Costa] and I think everyone already knows why. Obviously, people leave their mark on you, and the club also.
“Without a doubt, it was very special for me. I am very happy. It was very important to consecrate this game with a goal, it was very special for me.”
Dias’ arrival ends City boss Pep Guardiola’s search for a right-sided centre-back since the departure of Vincent Kompany last year.
