President Xi Wishes Biden Well Over Covid Infection

A day after Joe Biden, the 79-year-old President of the United States, tested positive for Covid-19, Chinese President Xi Jinping extended a message of sorrow to his American counterpart, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

On Thursday, Biden asserted that he was “doing great” and pledged to keep working while remaining homebound at the White House due to minor symptoms.

“I would like to express my deep sympathies to you and wish you a speedy recovery,” Xi wrote in the message, CCTV reported.

Since their previous virtual meeting four months ago, relations between the two global heavyweights have deteriorated on problems like Taiwan, Ukraine, and competition in the technology industry. This is the first public interaction between the two leaders since that time.

On March 18, the two participated in a video conference during which Biden cautioned Xi against supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Since they traveled together while they were both vice presidents, the leaders have been acquainted for more than ten years.

Weeks after their top diplomats met to try to defuse increasing hostility over Taiwan, Biden indicated earlier this week that he will speak with Xi within the “next ten days.”

Beijing has denounced Nancy Pelosi’s intended visit to Taiwan. If Pelosi went, it would be the highest-ranking US official to visit the self-governing island under the Biden administration, which China says is a part of its territory.

Pelosi mentioned the potential for a military escalation from China on Thursday, saying: “Maybe the military was afraid our plane would get shot down or something like that by the Chinese.”
