The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board of Directors has praised President Muhammadu Buhari for reversing the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw the national teams from international basketball.
This is contained in a statement issued on Friday in Ilorin by Mr. Afolabi Oni on behalf of the NBBF Media Team and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to the statement, the reaction came after the decision was announced at a news conference presided over by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar.
“After all of this back and forth, I am relieved to see that this decision has been reached, and it is a significant victory for basketball.” “There is no victor and no vanquish,” I truly believe.
“It warms our hearts that the Federal Government has decided to restore basketball to its rightful place.”
“We acknowledge that some of the stakeholders’ actions and their consequences are regrettable.”
“Valuable lessons have been learned, and stakeholders are now committed to working together in the long run.”

“Without international exposure, there can be no viable grassroots development.”
“No country can be an island while every child who takes up sports wants to play on the global stage and represent his or her fatherland, with the resultant huge economic benefit to the child who achieves global recognition in the game,” Kida said.
He also stated that the NBBF promised, by its decision at its most recent meeting in Lagos, to form a high-powered and all-inclusive committee to resolve any genuine grievances among stakeholders.
“At our most recent board meeting, we resolved to set in motion the machinery necessary to bring every genuine stakeholder to the table.”
“We have also resolved to maintain a high level of respect for the Federal Government, as represented by the Ministry of Sports because we recognize their supervisory role by global laws governing sports federations.”
“The reconciliatory move will herald the necessary constitutional amendments recommended by stakeholders, via the FMYSD and others, as approved by the NBBF congress—highest Nigeria’s governing body of basketball,” Kida said.
