Anil Kanti “Neil” Basu, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police in London, has disclosed that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, faced a number of real threats while she and her husband, Prince Harry, were residing in the country.
Anil described the threats made against the Duchess of Sussex and her husband as “disgusting and very real” in an interview with Channel 4 News.
He said; “I’ve talked publicly for many years about the threat of extreme right-wing terrorism in this country.
“If you’d seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it — the kind of rhetoric that’s online — if you don’t know what I know, you would feel under threat all of the time.”
Anil further disclosed that he and his group looked into the alleged threats made against Markle and “prosecuted” a number of those responsible.
In the past, Harry, 38, has made no secret of his desire to protect Markle, 41, and their two children, Archie, 3, and Lilibet, 17 months, from harm.
The royal claimed he feared for his wife’s safety in the Apple+ TV documentary “The Me You Can’t See” because of how the paparazzi treated his mother, Princess Diana, up until her fatal car accident.
Harry and Markle’s loss of security benefits in the UK after they declared they would step down as senior members of the royal family and move to California in 2020 was one of the factors that added to their safety fears.
The decision to have the couple’s security removed at the time by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee had a significant impact on the couple’s life.
