Serena Williams progressed into the second round of French Open 2020 with a hard-fought win over Kristie Ahn.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion had a slow start but eventually defeated Ahn 7-6 (7-3) 6-0.
After coming through a grueling 74-minute opener, sixth seed Williams showed more belief and precision as she raced to a second set win in just 27-minute.
The American will play Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round in Paris. Both players faced each other in the quarter finals of the US Open, with Williams winning the match after three sets.
Pironkova was handed a wildcard by Roland Garros organisers after an exciting run at the US Open, where she got the quarter finals. The US Open was her first tournament since 2017 after childbirth.
Pironkova, 33, defeated Germany’s Andrea Petkovic 6-3 6-3 to set up the rematch with Williams.
Meanwhile, seventh seed Petra Kvitova beat Oceane Dodin 6-3 7-5 to qualify for the second round.
Kvitova who was absent from last year’s tournament due to injury, needed just 76 minutes to get to the next round.
The two-time Wimbledon champion will face Jasmine Paolini in the second round , after the Italian beat Aliona Bolsova 6-4 6-3.
Kiki Bertens came back from a set down to beat Katarina Zavatska 2-6 6-2 6-0.
The fifth seed was the second best in the first set as she made 19 unforced errors but she imoroved her game and dominated the remaining two sets.
Next for Bertens is Sara Errani in the second round.
Last year’s runner-up Marketa Vondrousova was knocked out by Iga Swiatek 6-1 6-2.
