FG Working Towards Building Policy Framework For Health Industries – Minister

The Federal Government is working with significant stakeholders to build a policy framework for the growth of the Nigerian Health Industries Corporation.

This was stated by Amb. Mariam Katagum, Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja by Mrs. Oluwakemi Ogunmakinwa, Assistant Director of Information in the ministry.

At the 9th African Day of Standardization Symposium in Lagos, the minister of state gave a speech.

“Promoting the African Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Industries via Standardization” was the symposium’s central focus.

According to Katagum, HICON was created to offer the essential enabling environment that would draw investments for the expansion and development of the nation’s pharmaceutical and medical infrastructure.

She claimed that by creating HICON as an institutional framework, Nigeria would essentially guarantee that it had effectively created aptitude and capacity in the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API).

She claims that it will also secure the availability of Basic Medical Hardware, which in the short to medium term will greatly increase private investment in the healthcare industry.

She said that the Federal Government would encourage and draw local manufacturers of active pharmaceutical components, herbal cosmetics, and medical and diagnostic equipment with the adoption of HICON.

According to Katagum, they would implement policies that would encourage private sector investment in the healthcare industry and other related industries, making healthcare inexpensive and accessible with high-quality service delivery.

According to her, the health sector includes business operations in manufacturing, including, among other things, the production of medications and medical equipment.

Additionally, it encompassed services like medical and nursing care, insurance, and hospital management, as well as infrastructures like hospitals and lab design and construction.

She claims that it is one of the industries with the fastest and highest rate of growth in the world’s economies, the cornerstone of the social welfare system, and a key driver of advancement in the global Human Development Index.

The minister of state expressed optimism that, with strict attention to the requirements of applicable Standards at the national, regional, continental, and international levels, the seamless implementation of HICON would be feasible.

She demanded strong regulatory oversight, regular revisions to applicable standards in line with global best practices, and a creative strategy to stop the importation, production, and distribution of subpar pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Katagum also urged the Standard Organization of Nigeria and other industry regulators to step up efforts to make sure that only products and services that met the established standards were offered in the market.

She assured us that her government would continue to provide SON with the crucial assistance it needs to successfully carry out its job.

This can be proven by the recent approval obtained for the organization to work with the Nigerian Customs Service to combat the problem of substandard goods at all points of entry into Nigeria.

“It is crucial to mention that the African Continental Free Trade Area’s operationalization has made the continent into a single, sizable market and given us a competitive advantage in our trade with other continents collectively.

To not only fully use the enormous African market but also to position the continent against potential pandemics, she said, it is imperative to increase intra-African trade and business.

The African Organization for Standardization’s member nations participate in an annual event called the African Day of Standardization to raise awareness of standards development and conformity assessment among them.

SON and ARSO worked together to plan the event.
