Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, has warned that “Rogue criminal elements” are attacking hospitals, schools, and other vital national infrastructure in an effort to terrorize Nigerians.
In a statement released yesterday by the Force’s spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP reportedly gave orders to all police commissioners in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to establish secure perimeters around all hospitals, schools, and other vital national infrastructure within their jurisdictions. He issued the order as he was assessing the country’s overall security posture using reports from commands and formations all around the country.
In order to crack down “on pockets of crime and criminality being recorded in some states of the federation,” he ordered the CPs to conduct regular patrols, stop-and-search operations, raids, and a show of force by tactical commanders.
Additionally, he ordered the strategic police managers at all levels to give priority to using traditional and local intelligence, as well as other networks for intelligence collection, in order to find criminal hideouts and catch them before they strike.
‘’I am equally charging all officers and men to be on the offensive, and take the fight against crime to the doorposts of suspected criminal elements, including bushes and uncompleted buildings, profile them and charge those found wanting to court accordingly.
“Against the backdrop of this development, Nigerians are hereby urged to cooperate with the police, as many police operatives will be seen at strategic areas, routes and communities in order to suppress the antics and criminal activities of men of the underworld.’’
