Chelsea Gatecrash Arsenal’s Bid To Sign Raphinha For £60m

With a £60 million offer on Tuesday, Chelsea snubbed Arsenal’s attempt to capture Raphinha from Leeds United.

The negotiation process is moving forward after Leeds accepted a bid of £55 million plus add-ons from Raphinha’s agency, former Chelsea midfielder Deco.

After their initial offer of £30m plus add-ons was turned down last week, Arsenal conducted talks with Leeds on a hectic day and put up a new offering. However, they fell short of Chelsea’s offer, and the Brazilian winger is now likely to transfer to Stamford Bridge.

As they continue their simultaneous negotiations with Manchester City over a £55 million move for the England international, Chelsea intends to pair Raphinha with Raheem Sterling in a new-look strikeforce.

Raphinha was initially a target for Chelsea in January, but they anticipated that the 25-year-old would sign with Barcelona. However, Chelsea’s new American owner Todd Boehly acted shrewdly to give his team a dominating position when it became clear that he was mulling a move to Arsenal.

However, it is not anticipated that this will be a problem. Personal terms still need to be worked out.

Romelu Lukaku, a record signing, made the pivotal move while he was en route to Italy on Tuesday evening for his scheduled medical with Inter Milan on Wednesday morning.

A deal for Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt is also being discussed with Juventus, who are interested in either Christian Pulisic or Timo Werner.

While Chelsea has also inquired about De Ligt’s clubmate Oleksandr Zinchenko, Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel prefers to pair De Ligt with fellow countryman Nathan Ake from Manchester City.

Such a transaction would be challenging. Ake is willing to move back to London, but the cost will need to take into account City’s need to pay for a replacement player and the fact that the 27-year-old is considered to be “homegrown.”

Chelsea is also considering Jules Kounde of Sevilla, Milan Skriniar of Inter, and Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli for their defense in case other choices fall through. Additionally, Chelsea has been given the opportunity to acquire Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.

However, their primary goal is to obtain Raphinha’s signature before their competitors do.

The Porto Alegre flyer had been sought by Barcelona for the majority of the season, but due to their budgetary limitations, Raphinha was forced to wait for proposals from suitable Premier League clubs. After Arsenal made their first offer, he was willing to accept their offer, but Chelsea offered immediate Champions League football and, more significantly, matched Leeds’ asking price.

Raphinha helped Leeds just avoid relegation last season by scoring 11 goals and dishing out three assists. Tuchel will be thrilled to have acquired such a creative and attacking danger as he seeks to give Liverpool and Manchester City more of a challenge.

The club’s interest in Ousmane Dembele of Barcelona and Richarlison of Everton, who will soon be free agents, will almost probably end with the signing of Raphinha.

While preparing to make over £100 million from the sales of Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, who is anticipated to sign with City on Friday, Leeds will concentrate on their own goals.
