Nodjigoto Charbonnel, a rights advocate from Chad, has received the 2022 Rafto Prize in recognition of his efforts on behalf of torture victims.
His Youth for Peace organization (AJPNV), which works to prevent torture in Chad and care for its victims, received commendation from the Norwegian fund for its efforts.
575 torture survivors were treated by his organization last year.
After witnessing his father’s torture, Mr. Charbonnel, who has been detained three times by the Chadian government, started his career.
The Rafto Foundation bemoaned the significant prevalence of such abuse in Chad and encouraged Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, the self-declared head of state and son of the outgoing leader Idriss Déby, to bring criminal charges against those guilty.
The Rafto Prize’s past four recipients have gone on to win the Nobel Peace Prize; the 2022 recipient will be revealed next month.
