Ime Udoka, a former Nigerian basketball international, has been removed as the head coach of the Boston Celtics for the 2022–23 season after developing a romantic interest in a female staff member.
For “violations of team policies” Udoka, who earlier this year guided the Celtics to the NBA Finals in his first season as head coach, was suspended.
The 45-year-future old’s beyond 2022–2023 will “will be made at a later date” the organization indicated.
Joe Mazzulla, an assistant coach, will be given the temporary coaching position.
Udoka, who was raised by an American mother and a Nigerian father, won two bronze medals at the African Championships in 2005 and 2011 while representing Nigeria in international competition.
Udoka has a child from a long-term relationship with well-known American actress Nia Long.
