Aregbesola: Allow Nigerians With Expired Passports Return Home

Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola has given the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) instructions to allow Nigerians with expired international passports to return to their country.

In response to a complaint made by Mr. Jamui Kasumu, a Nigerian-American citizen, during his unexpected visit to the Alausa Passport Office, Aregbesola issued the directive on Wednesday in Lagos.

He asserted that as long as they had a current Nigerian passport, Nigerians living overseas were free to return home.

Except for children whose parents were Nigerians but whose identities had not yet been verified in conformity with immigration laws, the Minister claimed that no Nigerian needed a travel document to return home.

“I am using this medium to instruct all Nigeria Immigration Officers World-Wide to accord Nigerian travellers with expired Passport use such passports to return safely back home henceforth,” he said.

The Minister also suggested that Nigerians abroad update their travel documents in advance to avoid a rush in case of an emergency.

Before, Jamui Kasumu, a Nigerian-American citizen, protested to the Minister that Delta Airlines and Nigerian Immigration in America had forbidden him from entering Nigeria since his passport had run out.

After getting a travel document via a relative in Nigeria, Kasumu claimed he was able to return to Nigeria.

“I am appealing to you sir that the Immigration should allow Nigerians with expired Passport to come back to their country,” he said.
