The All Progressives Congress candidate, Tokunbo Abiru, has been declared winner of the Lagos East senatorial bye-election conducted on Saturday.
In an announcement made by The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abiru had amassed a total of 89,204 votes defeating his rival Babatunde Gbadamosi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who emerged with 11,257 votes.

Abiru, whose victory was declared by the INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Ademola Oremosu of the University of Lagos, had won in all five local government areas of the Senatorial District. The declaration was made in Somolu on Sunday.
“I, Prof. Oremosu Ademola, certify that I am the Returning Officer for the 2020 Lagos East Senatorial by-election held on the 5th day of December, Year 2020, the election was contested.
“That Abiru Mukhail Adetokunbo of All Progressives Congress, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
The INEC Returning Officer stated that the total number of registered voters in the district was 1,261,673 while the total accredited voters was 104, 894. Total vote cast was 104, 405 while the total valid votes stood at 102, 336. A total of 2,069 votes was said to have been rejected.
He also stated that twelve political parties contested in the Lagos East Senatorial bye-elections with eight candidates contesting at the Kosofe Constituency II, Lagos State House of Assembly by-elections.
The results saw Muyiwa Adebanjo of Action Alliance get a total of 96 votes, Mercy Adeoye of African Action Congress amass 248 votes and John Kome of African Democratic Congress finish with 376 votes.
Other results were Adebowale Ogunlaru of Action Democratic Party (535 votes), Olusola Babatope of Allied Peoples Movement (202 votes), Florence Trautman of Labour Party (58 votes), Adijat Lawal of New Nigeria Peoples Party (52 votes), Akin Olukunle of National Rescue Movement (65 votes), Saheed Aluko of Social Democratic Party (35 votes) and Taiwo Temitope of Young Progressive Party (208 votes).
